Primary Responsibilities

The School Bus Driver’s primary duty is the safe and efficient transportation of students on designated routes.

1. Safe Operation & Driving:

• Transportation: Safely operate a school bus on assigned routes, transporting students and authorized personnel to and from school and other activities (e.g., field trips, sporting events) according to a strict time schedule.
• Traffic & Safety Laws: Adhere strictly to all state, local, and school district traffic laws, regulations, and safe driving practices at all times.
• Loading/Unloading: Ensure the safety of students during the loading and unloading process, properly operating stop signs and flashing lights, and assisting students (including those with special needs) with boarding and securing seat belts/harnesses as required.

2. Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection:

• Pre-Trip/Post-Trip Checks: Conduct thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus (checking tires, brakes, lights, fluid levels, emergency equipment, etc.) to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
• Reporting: Promptly report any mechanical malfunctions, damage, or maintenance needs to the Transportation Supervisor/Mechanic.
• Cleanliness: Maintain the interior and exterior of the bus in a clean, sanitary, and presentable condition.
• Fueling: Ensure the bus is fueled and ready for the next day’s route.

3. Student Management and Welfare:

• Behavior Management: Maintain order and proper discipline among student passengers according to the school’s code of conduct to ensure a safe, respectful environment.
• Emergency Response: Administer basic first aid and respond effectively to emergencies, accidents, or unexpected situations according to established safety protocols.
• Communication: Communicate any student behavior or safety concerns to the appropriate school administration or parents/guardians.

4. Documentation and Reporting:

• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records and reports on mileage, fuel consumption, student counts, driving time, and safety inspections.
• Evacuation Drills: Conduct required emergency evacuation drills periodically as mandated by regulations.

Qualifications and Requirements

• License: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (or the local equivalent).
• Driving Record: A clean driving record with no major traffic violations.
• Experience: Previous professional driving experience, preferably as a school bus driver.
• Knowledge: Working knowledge of traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and basic first aid procedures.
• Skills:
  • Excellent time management and punctuality.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with students, parents, and staff.
  • High level of patience, calm demeanor, and ability to manage student behavior.
